Mostnica Gorge: Complete Hiking Guide – Lake Bohinj, Slovenia (2026)

This summer we decided to spend a few days in the Julian Alps in Slovenia, using the beautiful village of Stara Fužina — just a few minutes' walk from Lake Bohinj — as our base. We chose this spot because it gives quick access to many popular hiking and walking trails. One of them is the much-loved Mostnica Gorge (Slovenian: Korita Mostnice), located less than 15 minutes from Lake Bohinj, one of Slovenia's most popular destinations. The gorge sits at the end of the scenic Voje Valley and is part of Triglav National Park.

Korita Mostnice – What Is Mostnica Gorge?

Korita Mostnice and the Voje Valley rank among the most beautiful and most-visited natural attractions in the Bohinj area. Walking through the gorge, you can admire crystal-clear water, diverse rock formations, and unique flora and fauna.

The trail is easy to follow and well marked. The biggest challenges are two short but steep climbs (around 5 minutes each) — the first from the gorge up to the Voje mountain hut, and the second to the Mostnica Waterfall at the far end of the valley.

How to Get to the Mostnica Gorge

The walk to Korita Mostnice starts in Stara Fužina. You can leave your car in the village centre next to the supermarket. From there, follow the well-signed path towards Blato. The trail leads past pastures, along a fence and through the forest, until you reach a tall stone bridge — also known as the Devil's Bridge.

Devil's Bridge (Hudičev Most) – Mostnica Gorge

This is where the canyon reaches its greatest depth. From above you can watch the roaring, churning waters below. According to legend, the bridge was built by the devil himself, who demanded the soul of the first person to cross it. From the Devil's Bridge you can look down into the deeply carved rock canyon, at the bottom of which flows the crystal-clear Mostnica river. Wooden benches are provided nearby for a rest.

Mostnica Gorge Trail Guide – Step by Step

When you reach the small wooden ticket booth at the entrance to the Mostnica Gorge, you can choose between two paths — one along the right side of the canyon and one along the left. I recommend doing the loop anti-clockwise, so at the booth turn right across the next bridge.

From there, follow the panoramic path along the gorge through a forest track with numerous viewpoints where you can get close to the water. On the way back, it is worth choosing the route on the other side of the canyon.

Elephant Rock (Slonček) – Mostnica Gorge's Most Famous Feature

From the panoramic path running along the riverbed you can observe fascinating rock formations. The most famous of them has been named the Elephant (Slon in Slovenian), because from a certain angle it looks just like an elephant drinking water.

Planinška Koča na Voje – Mountain Hut on the Trail

The trail through the Mostnica Valley ends with a short climb to the Planinška Koča na Voje mountain hut, where you can try delicious home-cooked meals and refresh yourself before exploring the Voje Valley further (or heading back to Stara Fužina).

Voje Waterfall (Slap Voje) – 21m Waterfall at the End of the Trail

From the hut you can continue through the idyllic Voje Valley to the 21-metre Voje Waterfall (also known as the Šum Waterfall or the Mostnica Waterfall). Along the way you pass a junction offering two alternative routes to the waterfall. I suggest taking the right-hand path first — it is wide, comfortable and well marked.

Voje Valley Hike – What to Expect

Walking through this idyllic valley is a feast for the senses — not only the eyes. The blooming meadow delights the nose as well 😊. Along the way you reach a beautifully situated restaurant where you can sit down, rest before continuing, and sample local food and drinks.

From there a narrow path leads directly to the waterfall.

Return Route – Tips for the Way Back

After taking your photos at the waterfall, head back along the same path. If you prefer to return via the other side of the gorge, pay close attention — it is easy to miss the turn-off from the main track onto the narrow footpath (on the right side of the return route from the waterfall).

The overall trail is well marked and generally easy, with only two sections of moderate difficulty. The biggest challenges are two five-minute climbs: the first from the Mostnica riverbed up to the Voje hut, and the second to the Mostnica Waterfall at the end of the valley.
